There are no health requirements when applying for any Portuguese visa. If you’re concerned about your health, it is very advisable to get private health care with Medis or another local provider as getting an SNS number or the visa itself could take many months due to covid.

There is a very large backlog of applications and some visas which used to take weeks to be granted are in some cases taking more than 12 months. Should you fall ill and not have an SNS number or a valid visa, you could be at risk.

When applying for private healthcare, please remember that for the first 3 months, you will have limited or no cover, so it could be worth applying for private healthcare before you go to Portugal.

In order to get private healthcare, utility bills, leases and more you will need a NIF. You can apply for this before entering the country.
