It is illegal to work in Portugal without a visa. Luckily, it’s quite easy to apply for a Portuguese visa and most people qualify, so long as they don’t have a serious criminal record and can prove they have €7,620 or more in their bank account. This amount is quite important as it proves to the Portuguese authorities that you can be financially independent for up to 12 months.

Portugal deems a criminal record to be serious if it would be punishable by up to 12 months imprisonment in Portugal. If that is the case, it’s unlikely your application will be approved.
