D2 Startup Visa vs D7 Passive Income Visa in Portugal

The D2 Startup Visa is called the "immigrant entrepreneur" visa for a reason. Not only do you need to prove your income to obtain this visa, but your income needs to come from a specific source.

In order to qualify for a D2 visa, your income needs to come from a business you started yourself or a business you buy. This is a rather unique set of circumstances.

Both the D7 and the D2 will get you a residence and work permit. The difference is that if you come to Portugal with a job offer, or the goal to set up a company, you would have to go for the D2. If you solely have a passive income, you would have to go for the D7.

For that reason, we think most people would benefit from the D7 Passive Income Visa over the D2 Visa. However, if you are an entrepreneur and plan to move to Portugal and start a business, the D2 is the way to go.
