The general rule of thumb is that if you’re planning on staying in Portugal for more than three months, you must apply for a Portuguese residence permit or a residence visa depending on what you’re staying for. Once you’ve been residing in Portugal with an appropriate residence permit for five years, you can then apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship.
